Understand the treatment

Root canal treatment,
in plain language.

Root canal treatment may help keep a natural tooth that can be restored. An examination determines whether it is right for your tooth.

01 / Understand

The tissue inside your tooth

The pulp is soft tissue containing nerves and blood vessels. Deep decay, a crack, or an injury can affect it.

Start with an evaluation
02 / Treat

What treatment does

Root canal treatment removes inflamed or infected pulp, then cleans, fills, and seals the canals.

Explore the treatment step
03 / Protect

The final filling or crown

A permanent filling or crown restores the tooth afterward. Ask about this part of the plan as well as the root canal.

Understand the restoration

Have a tooth concern?
Start with an evaluation.

Tell the office about lingering sensitivity, pain when biting, swelling, an injured tooth, or a previous root canal recommendation.

You do not need to identify the cause yourself. An examination helps determine the care you need.

01 / Examine the tooth

Find out what your tooth needs.

Describe your concern and any previous recommendation. The dentist examines the tooth and may recommend tests and X-rays. Discuss whether a root canal, another treatment, or a referral is appropriate.

A useful question to ask

What is causing the problem, and can this tooth be restored?

Request an evaluation
02 / Confirm treatment

Confirm where treatment will take place.

Ask whether your tooth can be treated here or needs an endodontist—a root canal specialist. If root canal treatment is appropriate, the treating clinician numbs the area, removes affected pulp, and cleans, fills, and seals the canals.

A useful question to ask

Can this tooth be treated here, or should I see a specialist?

Call about treatment availability
03 / Restore & follow up

Complete the restoration and follow-up.

Ask which permanent filling or crown is recommended, who will provide it, and when. Include the restoration and follow-up in the overall treatment plan and estimate.

A useful question to ask

What restoration will I need, and is it included in the estimate?

Treatment and restoration

Root canal or crown?
They do different jobs.

A root canal treats the inside of the tooth. A filling or crown restores it afterward. Your dentist explains which restoration is appropriate.

Explore dental crowns

Root canal treatment

Treats the affected pulp and canal space inside the tooth.

Permanent filling or crown

Closes and protects the tooth. The choice depends on the tooth’s position and remaining structure.

After your treatment

Care for your tooth.
Keep your follow-up.

Follow your treating clinician’s instructions. Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until the permanent restoration is in place. Keep your recommended follow-up appointments.

Some tenderness can occur after treatment. Contact the treating office about severe or worsening pain, swelling, or a lost temporary filling.

Feeling nervous? Ask about numbing and how to request a pause. Do not assume sedation is available.

Straightforward answers

Questions about
root canal care?

Read the common questions below, or call to discuss an evaluation. Your examination guides the treatment recommendation.

Ask about an evaluation
Know when not to wait.

For trouble breathing or swallowing, call 911 or seek emergency medical care. Fever with facial swelling needs prompt attention; go to an emergency department if you cannot reach a dentist.

Does a toothache mean I need a root canal?
No. Tooth pain can have different causes. Sensitivity, pain when biting, or a changed tooth need evaluation; symptoms alone do not identify the treatment.
Which teeth can be treated here?
Call to confirm front-tooth root canal care and treatment for your specific tooth. Back teeth, previously treated teeth, and complex cases may need a specialist. Availability must be confirmed by the office.
What is an endodontist?
An endodontist is a dentist with additional specialist training in the inside of the tooth and the tissues around its roots. A referral directs you to the appropriate treating clinician.
What about discomfort?
Local anesthetic is generally used to numb the area. Tell the treating clinician about anxiety or discomfort and ask what to expect. Some tenderness can occur afterward; pain-free treatment is not guaranteed.
How many visits will I need?
It depends on the tooth, treatment complexity, and final restoration. Ask about expected visits, any temporary filling, and when the permanent restoration should be completed. There is no fixed schedule for every case.
Will I need a crown afterward?
Not always. A permanent restoration is important, but the type depends on the tooth and remaining structure. Front and back teeth may need different restorations. Read about dental crowns.
What should the estimate include?
Ask for the exam, recommended imaging, root canal treatment, and final filling or crown to be listed. Confirm whether specialist fees are separate, along with plan participation and benefits. Fees and coverage are not guaranteed.
